IIM Ahmedabad profile

In just four decades IIMA has evolved from being India’s premier management institute to a notable international school of management. It all started with Dr Vikram Sarabhai and a few other public spirited industrialists realizing that agriculture, education, health, transportation, population control, energy, and public administration were all vital elements in a growing society and that it was necessary to link these meaningfully with industry. The result was the creation of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad in 1961 as an autonomous body with the active collaboration of the Government of India, Government of Gujarat, and industry. It was evident that to have a vision was not enough. Effective governance and quality education were seen as critical aspects. From the very start the founders introduced the concept of faculty governance: all members of the faculty play an important role in administering the diverse academic and non-academic activities of the Institute. The empowerment of the faculty has been the propelling force behind the high quality of learning experience at IIMA. The Institute had initial collaboration with Harvard Business School. This collaboration greatly influenced the Institute’s approach to education. Gradually it emerged as a confluence of the best of Eastern and Western values.
MissionIIMA's mission is to help India and other developing countries improve their managerial practices both in the private and in the public sectors, and adopt superior public policies. It seeks to do this through producing risk-taking leader-managers who will pioneer new managerial practices and set new standards; through producing teachers and researchers who will generate new ideas of International significance; and through purposeful consulting aimed at helping client organizations scale new heights.

IIM Calcutta announces minimum cutoff scores

With the quota row not completely over, IIM Calcutta has quietly followed IIM Ahmedabad in 2007 in announcing their minimum acceptable cutoff scores in the CAT bulletin to maintain minimum standards. The cutoff applied even to reserved categories, says the bulletin.
The IIM Calcutta notification in the CAT 2007 bulletin reads, "A candidate (including a reserved category candidate) to be shortlisted for GD and PI for admission to post-graduate programmes should obtain a minimum of 20%, 20% and 10% in 'quantitative', 'logic and data interpretation' and 'verbal' sections respectively."

IIM Calcutta's Chairman of Admissions Prof Ashish Bhattacharya said, "This has been done to introduce more transparency into the admission process. Potential students need to get at least this much in CAT in order to pass the courses at IIM Calcutta and handle the academic rigor." He confirmed that these minimum cutoff scores were being used internally anyway but had been exposed to the public this year.

A source in IIM Calcutta however said that the institute has stated the cutoff as a shield against admitting compromised quality students in case the OBC quota is eventually implemented by the Union Human Resource Development Ministry.
The bulletin further reads for IIM Calcutta, "The actual cut-off used for short-listing, however, may be higher than the minimum cut-off and would depend upon the performance of candidates inCAT 2007."

IIM Ahmedabad had initiated exposing their minimum acceptable cutoffs in CAT 2006 and have continued with in CAT 2007. However, they have placed their minimum cutoffs at 25% in each section of CAT and 33% on the aggregate. Asked why IIM Calcutta's minimum cutoffs were lower than those of IIM Ahmedabad, Prof Bhattacharya said, "Both schools are very different and therefore have different criteria. You should ask IIM Ahmedabad why their cutoffs are higher."

No quota for NE students at IIM Shillong

The brand new IIM at Shillong, which will begin operations with 60 students starting 2008, will not have reservation for north-eastern students, the institute's Project Director Prof Pramod Tandon told PaGaLGuY.com over phone today."The seats at IIM Shillong will be available through the common pool of CAT 2007 admissions," he informed about the seventh IIM, which shall be called Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management (RGIIM), Shillong.

"The special name was chosen on the collective wish of the governments of all north-eastern states," he added. The institute will still be at par with the rest of the IIMs at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Indore and Lucknow in terms of its status and ownership, said Prof Tandon, who is also the Vice Chancellor of the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU).

The plan to lay the seventh IIM in north-east India was laid three years ago in order to provide an institute with national stature in that region. The Union HRD Ministry has in the past week issued recruitment advertisements in the media for a Director to head RGIIM, Shillong and more advertisements looking for faculty are expected to be issued in the coming months. A non-recurring expenditure fund of Rs 120 crores has been granted to the IIM, a large part of which will be used to build a campus in Shillong. Until then, the institute will function from the old premises of NEHU in Mayurbhanj complex.

Asked if RGIIM, Shillong's accessibility will be an obstacle in arranging resources and jobs for its students, Prof Tandon said, "These issues will be worked out in due time once a proper administrative team is in place. But on the whole I think that having an IIM in the region will help boost north east India's potential in natural resources, forestry, horticulture and related sectors by a huge margin," Prof Tandon said.

Sources in NEHU said that although RGIIM, Shillong will not have reservation for north east Indian students, having an IIM in the vicinity would get more students from that area to consider higher education in specialized institutes.
